MICHAEL G. PHELAN
Michael enjoys the highest rating for competency and ethics, "AV", by the Martindale-Hubbell Legal Directory. He serves as an elected board member on the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association's Board of Governors. He is also a member of the American Association for Justice, the Virginia State Bar, the Massachusetts State Bar and the Richmond Bar.
Michael's practice focuses on complex, contingent fee litigation, ranging from automobile accident, lead poisoning, pharmaceutical, and business litigation. After his very first jury trial, Michael qualified for and is a now a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum. One of Michael's lead poisoning cases was featured recently in the Richmond Times-Dispatch newspaper. Michael volunteers countless hours with organizations such as United Parents Against Lead to reduce the hazards of lead to children. He serves on the Board of Directors and is Treasurer of Northstar Academy, a non-profit school for learning challenged students.
Michael has extensive trial experience in state and federal courts, and has gained a national reputation for handling complex brain injury, lead poisoning, pharmaceutical, medical device and toxic substance cases. He achieved one of the largest recoveries in the country in a benzene exposure case involving an oral dental adhesive. Michael is the past Chair of the Product Liability Section of the VTLA and has lectured at the Section's annual retreats, at the 2006 ATLA Pharmaceutical/Medical Device seminar, and at many other seminars on numerous litigation topics. Michael formerly chaired the VTLA's statewide Advocacy Seminar.
Michael earned a B.A. in economics from Ohio Wesleyan University, where he was graduated cum laude in 1984. He is a member of Omicron Delta Epsilon economic honors society. He is a 1987 graduate of the University of Richmond Law School, where he was a member of the Law Review and Moot Court Board.
